課程概述

This course is designed to help students improve their command of English to higher-intermediate or advanced levels. As common English learners tend to have uneven developments in their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills, this course hopes to remedy this defect by encouraging students to participate in in-class discussions, and to deal with different aspects of a topic by utilising the four skills. For this reason, students’ participation in class is essential, including one session of oral presentation and three sessions of writing during the semester. For many of the non-English majors, the course of “Freshmen English” is their last chance in university to work on their English skills systematically, so, although this course is not exam-oriented, it aims at giving students a solid grounding in English. In this way, students will have a fair start in preparing for GEPT, TOEFL, TOEIC, or IELTS in their future career. The topics covered in this course deal with real-life situations, and are highly applicable to daily experiences. Students are encouraged to put what they learn into practice, and to appreciate the use of English as a means of facilitating communication and mutual-understanding. Guided reading and lecture on extracts from current news articles and English literature will also supplement the textbook-based curriculum.

課程目標
It is hoped that students will be able to elaborate on a given topic with competence, whether in spoken or written English. Students are also expected to work effectively with group members.
課程要求
As the course is organized around in-class discussion and writing, attendance comprises the basic requirement. Students who are absent (i.e. no-show without advanced notices to the instructor) for more than 10 hours in this semester will be flunked; students who are late for more than 30 minutes with no prior notice to the instructor will be regarded as absent. All in-class writing must be submitted at the end of the day’s session; otherwise the writing must be submitted before 12 o’clock noon of the coming Monday, and the writing will have 10 points deducted (the penalty does not apply to those students who are absent because of extreme conditions [e.g. illness, accidents, financial and family issues, etc.]). Students who commit any acts of plagiarism will be promptly flunked.
